O'Neil entered O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when he was still in highschool. She was able to advance into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' excitement for the performance. O'Neil received excellent praise from her judges. She was a victim of significant loss during the top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted to the bottom three or the bottom two spots and bottom two, respectively. The judges were awed by her performance, and suggested viewers choose singers who were well-known, such as Melissa. O'Neil's performances were so good that she never placed in the bottom three once again. The judge Werner said, following two more stunning performances that O'Neil was going to be the winner of the Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and the youngest contestant in history, following the September 7 finals in 2005. O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
